The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established standards for personal data protection by businesses. The Data Privacy Assurance standard - IS 17428 will standardize the personal data protection practice among businesses that deal with the collection and processing of individual information. The standards are inapplicable to businesses that process non personal data. To be in total compliance, businesses will have to mandatorily comply with Part 1 of the standards. The BIS also published a separate document outlining further details as to how businesses can ensure compliance.
